They say that it isn’t the destination that counts; it’s the journey. And it’s true enough to say that my journey since joining this blog has been a whirlwind. I mean, let’s face it – I have the best job in the world! Who else gets to claim they are a ‘gamer’ as a vocation? But that’s what I consider myself to be … a gamer. I play games. I review games. I write about games. I think of what I’d love to see in games. But mainly, I play games. A lot of games!
And I’ve seen the journey this blog has taken too. There’s been a few changes to the place lately and I’m really liking the direction it’s heading. Recently we’ve started to add in game-play movies that show you what games are really like to play. It’s been a challenge trying to create them for you, but I think you don’t really understand the places a game will take you until you’ve stretched your wings and tried it. The next best thing is to watch somebody else try it.
After all, good games – and better yet, great games – are something we invest in. We invest our time, our money and sometimes even a little sweat! Even if for only a few hours, games give us the perfect escape. We plonk ourselves down, whether for five minutes or five hours – and let ourselves BE in the game.
And escapes are good. They’re good for your health because they give your body time to recuperate. They ease the mind of the daily troubles and let you concentrate on something that rewards you like nothing else. They can educate you, relax you and encourage your creativity. There’s very little to be said that’s negative to a little casual gaming.
But as part of the escape, games also give us a journey. It’s like armchair travelling (I love that phrase but no, I didn’t coin it). You can be anywhere, anytime and in any part of the this world or another world. You can see things you normally wouldn’t, witness life in a different time and imagine the world in a parallel universe.
So I’ve decided they are right: the journey is better and more important than the destination. And with casual games you can visit almost everywhere and have a lot of fun while doing it. Care to go on a journey with me? Next stop: Egypt! China! Japan! Or even back in time!
